X-ray Observations of Neutron Star Binaries: Evidence for Millisecond Spins
نویسنده
چکیده
High amplitude X-ray brightness oscillations during thermonuclear X-ray bursts were discovered with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in early 1996. Spectral and timing evidence strongly supports the conclusion that these oscillations are caused by rotational modulation of the burst emission and that they reveal the spin frequency of neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB), a long sought goal of X-ray astronomy. I will briefly review the status of our knowledge of these oscillations. So far 10 neutron star systems have been observed to produce burst oscillations, interestingly, the observed frequencies cluster in a fairly narrow range from ∼ 300 − 600 Hz, well below the break-up frequency for most modern neutron star equations of state (EOS). This has led to suggestions that their spin frequencies may be limited by the loss of angular momentum due to gravitational wave emission. Connections with gravity wave rotational instabilities will be briefly described.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملMillisecond Oscillations in X-ray Binaries
The first millisecond X-ray variability phenomena from accreting compact objects have recently been discovered with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Three new phenomena are observed from low-mass X-ray binaries containing low-magneticfield neutron stars: millisecond pulsations, burst oscillations and kiloHertz quasiperiodic oscillations. Models for these new phenomena involve the neutron star s...
متن کاملX - ray sources in ω Centauri and other globular clusters
X-ray bursts from bright sources in globular clusters of our galaxy show that at least 11 (of a total 13) of these sources are neutron stars. One of the low-luminosity X-ray sources in ω Cen is a neutron star accreting at a low rate. Together with the discoveries that M 15 contains two bright X-ray sources, and that 47 Tuc and NGC 6440 contain 2 and 5 low-luminosity X-ray sources with a neutron...
متن کاملCorrelation between radio luminosity and X-ray timing frequencies in neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries
We report on correlations between radio luminosity and X-ray timing features in X-ray binary systems containing low magnetic field neutron stars and black holes. The sample of neutron star systems consists of 4U 1728–34, 4U 1820–34, Ser X-1, MXB 1730-335, GX 13+1, the millisecond X-ray pulsars SAX J1808.4-3658 and IGR J00291+5934, and these are compared with the black hole system GX 339–4. The ...
متن کاملEvidence from quasi-periodic oscillations for a millisecond pulsar
We have detected quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) near 1 kHz from the low mass X-ray binary 4U 0614+091 in observations with XTE. The observations span several months and sample the source over a large range of X-ray luminosity. In every interval QPOs are present above 400 Hz with fractional RMS amplitudes from 3 to 12%. At high count rates, two high frequency QPOs are detected simultaneously...
